My Father (2020) by Ai-Li Hollander
11x7", gouache
not for sale
My piece fits into the theme “Everyday Unboxed” as it addresses the heightened emotions and baggage that I and the individuals around me feel. When COVID-19 took stability and predictability away from my everyday life, the resulting feelings colored and changed the way that I see others and the world around me. In the portrait, you see my father through a maze of colored concentric circles. These structures provide a filter with which I see the world and provide a visual reminder of the turbulence and emotion that constantly affects my vision.

A Cry for Life (2020) by Carolyn Francisco
18x24", colored pencil & acrylic paint
for sales inquiry: carolyn.francisco@hotmail.com
'A Cry for Life" was originally a redraw of a concept I created in 2016, the goal being to entertain myself at the start of quarantine in March. It ended up becoming a largely experimental piece where I decided to combine a sense of realism and abstraction.
The Lion came to express some of the feelings I had pent up. Things like confusion, pain and loneliness about the uncertainty of our situation. He is alone in the void, much as I was alone in my room.

'Slain' is the seventh and crowned piece of a Skull series I finished just before the pandemic. This is one of the most difficult artworks have had to research for, simply because dragon skulls do not naturally occur. I had to research dinosaur bones and other artist depictions of what a dragon skull could look like and work from that.

In Silence (2020) by Diana Palma
4000x5000pxl, digital painting made with Procreate

In Silence focuses on the individual reflection that many underwent during the quarantine. The message is of accepting the unknown and being comfortable and welcoming of our own company. With the pandemic, many people have had more than enough time to spend with themselves this piece aims to transcribe that experience. Finding comfort within ourselves as well as evolving and along the way, enjoying the silence of getting to know ourselves. The painting demonstrates comfort in being alone or at least being used to one's company. The room is tidy because it's the only place where we have control over at the moment. Everything is unknown but the days still feel repeated, hence the replica painting on the wall to demonstrate repetition. The window represents an escape from the real world like dreams. For me, I made it a scenery of Mexico because it brings comfort and peace.

The quote is from a picture book that I grew up reading and started thinking of again during the pandemic. The story is about a poor bamboo cutter who finds a girl inside of a bamboo stalk and raises her with his wife. Although she grows to be very beautiful, she never marries, and eventually has to return to the moon. The happiness that the couple experienced with her was fleeting, but they will remember her forever. This idea of momentary but pure happiness is repeated a lot in Japanese folklore. Only after being quarantined for so long did I begin to truly understand the message of this story.
Joyful Nostalgia (2020) by Nathania Lim
12x16", acrylic
not for sale
In this painting, I hoped to capture the love, joy and optimism my family brings me during this chaotic COVID-19 time by breaking free from the box of remote living and into a nostalgic childhood moment. My sister, lucky to have been painted a princess, smiles happily behind me, a glowering toddler wondering how she got stuck as the clown. I decided to create the painting purely through dots in order to represent the various memories and hopes which make us who we are. Using colour theory to amplify my message, I made this painting with the hopes that it would bring joy to whoever looked upon it and remind them of their own happy memories and the possibility for future ones as well, evoking happiness & hopefulness that I think we could all benefit from during this time.
Little Goldie in a Sea of Koi (2018) by Nathania Lim
16.5x22", acrylic

This piece celebrates individualism amongst a sea of conformity. In today’s world, we tend to prioritize following the latest trend over staying true to ourselves, evolving into a fear of stepping outside the box. The goldfish in this piece represents the unique individual, who while seeming less stunning than the koi, becomes the notable focal point among the repetitive forms of the koi fish. This dynamic serves to remind us that stepping outside of the usual conformity to embrace your true self can be the best form of beauty and liberation.

Self Care (2019) by Taylor Yingshi
28x22", oil

This piece questions what self care really means. The word has become equated with retail therapy, skincare, and copious amounts of bath bombs. We deceive ourselves into thinking that beauty will make us feel better, and that we can buy away our problems. Capitalistic mirage of self-improvement or genuine way to step back from hustle culture—this depends on how individuals interpret “self care”.

We often fit our days in a box. We do the same things over and over again mechanically. With no meaning and no emotion. My artwork serves to show the idea of breaking out of our mechanical lives and reaching for a higher purpose towards the light. Finding meaning and happiness in everything we do is ultimately the goal. And so each day, we push harder and further out of our boxes and away from our robotic action, towards a world filled with a bit more color!

Derealization is a mental state where you feel detached from your surroundings. People and objects around you may seem unreal." This feeling seems pervasive (to varying degrees) during these times. It's hard to feel attached when everything is virtual. It's a challenge to maintain the reality in your head of actions, places, and people that you haven't been able to experience in real life for months. Sometimes, I feel like my mind is blowing away but my body is stagnant, and this is what that feeling looks like to me.
